Here, we see how life was for West Indians emigrating to England in 1948. Fifty years on, the Windrush generation tell their stories of settling into and influencing the British climate. In the centre the heading Black Britain: A Photographic History and below the text As a fan of photography, capturing the raw energy and lifestyle of a subculture intrigues me a lot. It's really something to get a snapshot of stylish people who resemble yourself within history. Looking at the different protests that occurred in the 20th century also struck me as they closely mirror the concerns of today - makes you think what will continue in the future. In the centre the heading On Beauty by Zadie Smith, underneath the text Smith's novel focuses on the lives of a mixed-race family living in Americ. Since the family are from the UK and the US, it highlights the differences in culture and values within Britain and America whilst living with their personal identities and beliefs. It is an homage to E.M. Forster's novel, 'Howard's End'. In the centre the heading Things Falll Apart by Chinua Achebe, underneath the text What I like about Achebe is how his aim was to tell authentic stories about Africa as opposed to placing a generally reductionist and negative view. This story includes fleshed out characters and looks at Nigerian life before and after European colonisation, while focusing on themes such as masculinity, culture and language.
